A highly interest lead offstrike from aureus dies
Lot 3498
Hadrian, 117-138. 'Aureus' (Lead, 28 mm, 11.78 g, 6 h), an offstrike in lead. Rome (?), 124-125. HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS Laureate head of Hadrian to right, with slight drapery on his left shoulder. Rev. COS / III Sol, radiate and nude but for cloak draped over his left arm, mounting fast quadriga galloping to left, holding reins in his right hand and whip ins left. Cf. Calicó 1209-10 and RIC 726 (for prototype in gold). A very interesting and unusual piece. Some scuffs and deposits, otherwise, very fine.

The types of this highly interesting large lead strike are those of an aureus of Hadrian, and the excellent style indicates that it might be a trial strike from official aureus dies.
